How Handmade Rag Rugs Are Made

If you have many fabric scraps or old sheets and clothes at home, you should create handmade rag rugs. This is a very cool do-it-yourself project because you do not need to spend money to buy materials. Furthermore, you can use it after you are done braiding and stitching. You can use it in your bedroom or kitchen. You can as well give it as a present. You do not even need advanced sewing talents to do this. Your basic sewing skills that you have learned when you were in grade school will do, if you can still remember them. To assist you with this project, here are the basic steps that you should follow.

1. Prepare everything that you will need. This is not difficult because you only need a few things-your scrap fabrics, needle, thread that will blend the colors of your scrap fabrics, and an iron. Make sure that they are within easy reach before you start with your project to save time.

2. Begin working with your fabric scraps. Cut them into strips about 3 inches wide and equal length. The corners will have loose threads. To straighten these out, fold the edges and iron them out to flatten. This will create your handmade rag rugs refined and orderly.

3. Braid the strips by 3′s. Choose colors or designs that will create an interesting pattern once you are done with your project. Braid all the fabric strips, making certain that they are aligned correctly. Once you are done with the braids, sew the ends of the strips to keep them in place.

4. You can now create a pattern using your braided strips. You can make different shapes using your braided fabrics such as circle, rectangle, oval, and square. It depends on your preference and your rug’s function. Secure the pattern by stitching the braids together. Use a huge needle and a strong thread for this project.

5. Your handmade rug is now ready for use. These braided rugs are great for indoor or outdoor use. They are as well a great housewarming gifts for your friends who just moved in to a new home.
