Get Rid of Cat Fleas

Posted by outside_voices on Tuesday, 22 December, 2009

Cat fleas are one of the most common and widespread fleas on earth. It is the main type of flea found on rodents and on other pets. Typically, cat fleas can be found around the cat’s abdomen and near their tails. Despite their small size, cat fleas can transmit disease to humans through biting. It takes a great deal of effort and time to get rid of these pests. Although cat fleas are visible to our eyes, it is still difficult to exterminate them since they do not limit themselves to just felines. For instance, beds, counters, and couches. Furthermore, fleas can jump, fly, and zigzag out of sight, making it harder to remove them manually.

Cat fleas lay their eggs in the bodies of their hosts. However, these eggs fall to the ground when it becomes mature. It generally takes about three weeks for a cat flea to mature into adulthood. Once a cat flea reaches adulthood, it seeks for a new blood source which starts the life cycle all over again.

It is crucial to know how to get rid of these pests that has a potential to become an extreme bothersome for both the pet owner and the pet. Some ideas to initially stop the itching starts with a few of these tips:

  • Carefully comb through the pet’s hair to make sure you have captured all the fleas.
  • Purchase a cat flea-killing shampoo from a local pet store and immerse the pet in a flea bath. When bathing is over, thoroughly clean the bathroom including all towels and rugs.
  • Clean spots where your pet spends the most time. Particularly pay close attention to their bedding.

Cat fleas cannot survive for an entire life cycle on humans. However, they can bite humans which for some people can cause an allergic reaction. Therefore, along with these tips, homeowners should vacuum on a daily basis since it swoops in and depletes an entire generation of fleas. When vacuuming, it is important to target low foot traffic areas such as underneath furniture and the space behind doors.

When the immediate flea problems have been solved homeowners should turn their attention to long-term prevention of these pests from re-entering their homes. Many pet owners assume that fleas are a result of uncleanliness. However, it turns out that cat fleas can exist anywhere disregard of cleanliness. Here are some do-it-yourself pest control methods homeowners can implement to permanently exterminate cat fleas:

  • Pay close attention to the pet’s itching. Do not simply ignore this matter by assuming that it is just because he or she was just groomed or because it is time for a winter coat to grow in. Homeowners can save a lot of trouble down the road by spotting flea infestations early.
  • Apply Vermiculite to carpeting and upholstered fabric. This product comes in a powder form that can be sprinkled and vacuumed up to help exterminate cat fleas and its eggs.
  • Purchase a pet flea control product from a local pet store and apply it to the pet.

Cat flea extermination is something that no pet owner wants to encounter. By keeping up with chores and watching pets for signs of fleas, homeowners can stay on top of a cat flea pest problem before the fleas take a bite out of them.

Want A Quick Way To Add Value To Your Home? Add Diy Conservatories

Posted by outside_voices on Sunday, 20 December, 2009

Presently one of the recognized ways to add value to your home right now is with do it yourself conservatories, and in some places, like the UK, these are a great hit. It’s an excellent by the prefabricated builders to provide conservatories, or extra rooms, ready made at the factory to just build on to an existing house. Naturally there are some size restrictions, notably where the height is concerned, but if you keep within the guidelines you should be fine.

So why are diy conservatories all the rage? They are pre-built at the factory and then shipped, which means they can be put together quickly, either by a diy person, or by a qualified builder,  much faster than it would take to build one from the ground on up. The conservatories have many different designs, and materials used for these diy projects so that you can get the conservatory to blend in with the existing building.

Once you have decided on the style of conservatory, and what it is to be built of, and your diy conservatory room has been shipped to you, the instructions will make sure it is put together in surprisingly little time. It will look fantastic as though it belongs to the original house, and your home will have gained value more than the total cost of the conservatory and the labour used to put it together. And whereas some diy projects may make a room like a living room look cleaner and brighter and maybe larger, the diy conservatories add a lot more value to a home by actually giving it more floor space, and we all know how we are always looking for that extra space!

When you compare this project with say, a diy kitchen project, it is easy to see why conservatories add a lot more value than a kitchen refit or upgrade probably would do. But obviously all of this depends on your particular situation, and the condition and age of your home. And with the do it yourself conservatories, you are guaranteed to get an impressive building. It is not accurate to say that about other diy projects!

If you consider a diy bedroom, your efforts may make it look more impressive to you, or even a lot better, but generally speaking, looks do not add much to the value of the house. And remember that anyone interested in buying your home will not have seen how it looked previously to know how much better you have made it. They are only going to see how it appears now, and decide whether it is practical and will work for their family.

The same applies to  projects, although there are occasions when these can be a big benefit to a do it yourself kitchen, but typically, the value of an extra room is worth far more. If you are considering diy windows, then don’t. Your contributions will probably not be under warrantee, and it is way harder than it appears to replace windows, frames and all. If the window work is under warrantee, that probably says more about the value of the house than if you replaced them, no matter how good you are at do it yourself jobs.

So, if you are looking to increase the value of your home before you sell it to move elsewhere, then the general concensus is that you can’t go wrong with diy conservatory rooms, but you’ll have to do your own research into your home to make sure.
