Who Is To Price Your Stuff?

Estate sales have taken the spot of garage sales in our modern times. There is a lot more that goes into them, and for different reason, you might find some good items at wonderful prices. Usually a professional seller is employed, and this person is knowledgeable in antiques. The experts are also great with people, because they understand sometimes these can be difficult for people to go through. There are normally emotions attached to inanimate objects that people call family heirlooms.

Sometimes these sales are because the homeowner has died and the relatives don’t know what to do with all the items that are left behind. After 50 years of inhabiting one place, things can accumulate to an overwhelming situation and the family can’t provide proper storage for it all. Things that the owner had emotional attachment to can be sold with no effort. Old antique mirrors that were once modern mirrors are sold at a higher price than the owner could have ever gotten. Everything is sold with respect to the owner’s memory.

The children often times have their own homes and have no space or need for these old contemporary mirrors or other items. That is one reason you hire professionals to come in and go through everything without too much emotion. It is best to employ an expert with a background in antiques and be sure you pay on a commission basis. They should also bring a team with them to clean, dust and make everything presentable and ready. Sometimes these teams polish silver, tune old pianos and wash some old clothes, so all is clean and looks good.

Antique sellers sometimes get an unjust rap because some folks think they are profiting off of others’ misfortunes. This is due to the selling of items from homes that have been foreclosed on by the government because the homeowner fell behind in the mortgage. Why shouldn’t the professionals make money; the bank can’t sell these things alone. Some say this a predatory style of business, but in this economy you must make a living when possible. Besides, someone will have to sell these things anyway, so why not make some money and make it easier on everyone?

The majority of folks understand that it requires a professional for such a grueling task and are happy to pay for the service. Without the professionals, you would just have another garage sale and possibly sell an antique for a few bucks that was worth a few hundred. So don’t think of these people as bad, but instead as a much needed helping hand in a difficult time. Somebody you wouldn’t want to be without.
